Considered by some as a form of alternative medicine, chiropractic centers on manipulation of the musculoskeletal system (notably the spine). It is often associated with mysticism and its founder (D. D. Palmer in the 1890’s) called it “a science of healing without drugs”. Palmer, followed by his son, founded a college to spread his ideas and this grew to become the Council on Chiropractic Education that currently recognizes 18 Doctor of Chiropractic programs nationwide. Qualified practitioners have to meet various State licensing requirements and abide to the code of ethics set by the American Chiropractic Association.

Vertebral Subluxation

This was the original core of chiropractic (subluxation is a medical term for dislocation) and it refers to a spinal segment that has become dysfunctional for some reason. Since all aspects of our bodies are controlled from the brain by electrical signals sent through our central nervous system and the main route for these signals is through our spinal cord, anything that is out of place in our spine can interfere with the signals. Thus, if a nerve in the spine is trapped by a collapsed disc, the wrong signals can be sent or received.

Pain Relief

In some cases, the brain receives a pain signal when, in fact, nothing is causing any pain. This is not only neck or back pain, it could also be headache or problems with any of our organs. Practitioners of so called “straight” chiropractics believe that spinal manipulation can relieve pain sensations in any part of the body.

However, a growing number of practitioners now take what is called a ”mixed” view. Their basic concept still concentrates on the importance of the spine and the benefits available from manipulation but, they also utilize more commonplace medical techniques – especially in diagnostics. “Mixers” will often work in conjunction with osteopaths and, in addition, take a more holistic view towards patient wellness. They will include treatments like acupuncture, yoga, massage, homeopathy, nutritional advice and physical therapy in their programs. Sports medicine, deep tissue therapy, infrared, laser and ultrasound techniques are all found in many of today’s chiropractic clinics.

In a way, a “mixed” chiropractic clinic can be said to be a real alternative to attending a conventional medical clinic, doctor or hospital. This would not apply to things like broken limbs and trauma but it may well be the case for many of those “something is wrong but I do not know what or why” general complaints.

If you feel that the services of a Lincoln Park Chiropractor could be of benefit to you, contacting Chicago Chiropractic & Sports Injury Centers could be the answer.
