What Is Liposuction and What Exactly Can A Patient Expect from It?

by | Mar 13, 2020 | Surgery

Liposuction in Chicago Loop is a cosmetic procedure in which the doctor surgically removes fat deposits. It is a type of body contouring done to give the patient a trimmer and more proportionate look. Liposuction has existed since the 1980s, and there are now many variations. It can be done on just about any part of the body, and it can be done on its own or along with another procedure.

What Happens During Liposuction?

Liposuction always involves using a hollow tube called a cannula that will break up the fat cells. The cannula is attached to a suction that will then vacuum them out. Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, and the patient will be given “twilight” sedation to keep them comfortable.

What Is Tumescent Liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction is the most common type. The doctor will inject the treatment area with a saline solution containing lidocaine and epinephrine. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic, while epinephrine reduces bleeding by constricting blood vessels. The solution also makes the fat cells firmer, so it will be easier for the surgeon to break them apart and remove them.

What Is SmartLipo?

SmartLipo, which is also called laser-assisted liposuction, is a variation of tumescent liposuction. After injecting the solution, the doctor will insert a thin laser fiber into a small incision. The laser will melt the fat cells. The surgeon will then insert the cannula and vacuum out the resulting liquid. The patient’s body will excrete anything left behind as waste products.
